From morphology to morphometry: The potential of quantifying morphological parameters at scale
Traditionally, hematologists have relied on their expertise and trained eye to analyze blood smears under a microscope, a skill developed over years of practice. However, with advancements in technology, digitized full-field images are transforming blood smear analysis, allowing for more objective, scalable, and remote diagnostics. This shift is also paving the way for AI-powered decision support in hematology labs.
In this webinar, Dr. Ben Zion Katz from the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center (TASMC) Hematology Lab will showcase the evolution from digital solutions based on individual cell images to Full-Field digital cell morphology. He will present compelling clinical findings from a multi-institutional Turnaround Time (TAT) study, highlighting how these innovations have streamlined workflow and improved accuracy in the lab.
Dr. Katz will also explore the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in red blood cell (RBC) morphology, demonstrating how the analysis of over 10,000 RBCs per sample enhances clinical decision-making. Additionally, Katz will explain the impact of automated platelet clump detection on faster and more reliable diagnoses, especially when precise platelet counts are essential.
Looking to the future, Dr. Katz will introduce the concept of "morphometry"—the groundbreaking ability to quantify morphological parameters at scale using Full-Field technology and AI. He will share recent findings from myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and CAR-T cell therapy research at TASMC, illustrating how accurate morphometry could improve diagnostic precision and lead to new, morphology-based biomarkers for hematology.
Join us to explore how Full-Field digital morphology and AI-driven innovations are shaping the future of hematology, from improved workflow efficiency to enhanced diagnostic accuracy.
Key learning objectives
- Discuss the evolution of digital cell morphology technology: Participants will be able to describe the progression from manual microscopy to Full-Field digital morphology and explain how each stage impacts laboratory workflow.
- Apply AI-driven decision support in clinical practice: Attendees will be able to recognize the benefits of such tools when used in red blood cell morphology analysis or in platelet clump detection, and how these advancements can improve diagnostic accuracy and workflow efficiency.
- Participants will become familiar and be able to explain the principles of "morphometry" and its role in quantifying morphological parameters, with an understanding of how this can be applied to research and clinical diagnostics, particularly in MDS and CAR-T cell therapy.
